Midsummer? Beginning of Summer?

Here in the U.S., people tend to think of the summer solstice as the first official day of summer. In many temperate regions, including Europe, the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and is often referred to as “midsummer.”

Solstice Celebrations

Long before you started celebrating the summer solstice by making your own terrarium or shopping for unique flower pots, cultures around the world celebrated it with various festivals and rituals. In fact, though the exact history of Stonehenge is unknown, many historians believe it was designed to mark the solstices and equinoxes every year.

These festivals and rituals generally centered around the theme of religion or fertility.

Etymology Of “Solstice”

Solstice is derived from two Latin words: sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

Interestingly, 2016 was actually the first time in nearly 70 years that a full moon and the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurred on the same day. Just as the full moon rose on the 2016 summer solstice, the sun set — and it was really like the sun stood still.
